Chemical Agent Liquid Detectors

3-Way, M-8, and M-9

   The Chemical Agent Liquid Detector papers were designed to meet the need for a simple, rapid method of detecting and differentiating between the 3 major groups of liquid chemical warfare agents. The detector papers can quickly determine the presence of: G, V or H agents in liquid form.

   If the paper comes in contact with an agent, it will change color. The 3-Way and M-8 papers exhibit 3 colors to signify the presence of G,V, or H agents. M-9 paper develops a single color which indicates the presence of any of the above agents.

The detectors consist of:

  • Dye impregnated paper sensitive to liquid chemical agents

  • Booklets with adhesive backed sheets (3-Way)

  • Booklets of sheets without adhesive (M-8)

  • Dispenser of rolls with adhesive backing (M-9)

  • Color comparison charts and instructions

The test consists of:

  • Detaching a piece of the paper from a booklet or dispenser roll

  • Exposing the paper to a surface suspected of contamination by a liquid chemical agent or to the agent itself either by wiping the suspected surface with the paper or by attaching the paper to a surface which may be exposed in the future.

Chemical Agent Detector Kit M256A1

   The M256A1 Chemical Agent Detector Kit is a compact, simple-to-use kit.  Agents detected: Nerve agents G, V; Blood agents AC, CK; Mustard H, HD; Phosgene oxime CX; Lewisite L.  12 tests.

The kit consists of:

  • A plastic carry case with Velcro closure

  • A booklet of M-8 test paper sealed in a plastic bag

  • Attached instruction cards

  • 12 pouches containing the chemical agent detector samplers

   The test is carried out by following the simple instructions printed on the sampler packet.

The test consists of:

  1. Activating the sampler by breaking the integral crushable ampules and releasing test reagents

  2. Exposing the activated test disc to ambient air

  3. Comparing the observed color change to the color chart in the instructions, thereby determining the presence or absence of chemical agents.

Chemical Agent Detector Kit C-2

   The Chemical Agent Detector Kit C-2 is designed for issue to a small unit.  It is easily operated by one person with a minimum of training.  Agents detected: Nerve agents GA, GB, GD, VX; Blister agents H, HN, T, CX; Blood agents AC, CK; Choking agents CG.

The kit may be used for:

  • Determining the presence or absence of chemical agents

  • Identifying chemical agents

  • Collecting vapor samples of unknown chemical agents for laboratory identification

  • Identifying when it is safe to unmask for either short (1/2 hr.) or long (12 hr.) periods.

  • Testing for the presence of chemical agents after decontamination operations

Chemical Agent Vapor Detector

   The Chemical Agent Vapor Detector is a simple, inexpensive, expendable device designed for the individual soldier to detect nerve gas vapors.  Detects nerve agents G, and V.

The detector can be used to quickly determine:

  • If a chemical attack detected by a �gas alarm� system is dangerous in the immediate vicinity of the individual

  • When it is safe for an individual to unmask

The detector consists of:

  • A plastic detector body containing an enzyme impregnated test paper

  • A plastic holder containing a chemically impregnated test paper

  • An instruction sheet

The test consists of:

  1. Moistening the test paper in the detector body and exposing it to the atmosphere

  2. Pressing the detector body into the holder so that the papers contact.  The test paper will change color to blue or green in the absence of nerve agent vapor.  If nerve agent vapor is present or the test has been incorrectly performed, the color of the test paper will remain unchanged.

Chemical Agent Detector Simulator Training Kits

   Training Kits are designed for classroom training situations and simulate the presence or absence of nerve, blister or blood agents.  Trainees use hinged protective strips that contain needed ampoules for simulating blood, blister or nerve agents.

The kits consist of:

  • A corrugated box containing the simulators

  • Instructions manual

  • A total of 36 pouches which include the simulators and blank samplers

   The test is carried out by following the simple instructions printed on the inside of the box, on the sampler packet and in the instruction manual.

Note: "Timely detection and warning are critical to the protection of responders and casualties.  Detection of agent type and concentration after an incident can allow adoption of an effective protective posture.  However, agent detection will rarely assist in casualty care because (a) detectors will not be on site at the initiation of the incident, and (b) several agents - ie, nerve agents and cyanide - can cause severe effects including death before detectors are on site, or with some detectors before they would respond even if on site.  (The military's M256A1, for example, requires 15 minutes to provide a response.)  Detection of chemical agents is far ahead of detection of biological agents because of the great difficulties in detection of aerosols and distinguishing between the small quantity of live agent particulates present and normal environmental pollution.  With the advent of biotechnology and new methods available, such as PCR, gene probes and recombinant DNA, it is expected that biological detection and identification will improve in the near term.  Under development are hand-held assay tickets for the identification of biological agents.  Each ticket can identify a specific agent.  Hand-held assay tickets work similar in fashion to home pregnancy tests.  Porous material (paper) is impregnated with antibodies that form a color in the test spot when they come into contact with the agent.  The military has a number of devices to detect chemical agent vapor or liquid.  The most portable of the vapor detectors are the M256A1 card or ticket and the Chemical Agent Monitor (CAM).  The most simple liquid detectors are the M8 and M9 papers." - Jane's Chem Bio Handbook
